There is talk of villagers of Nakabuta in Bua relocating to a new village site, according to North Divisional Planning Officer Setareki Dakuiboca.
Mr Dakuiboca said it required the villagers’ consent for relocation work to begin.
“We have plans with the Waterways Ministry to conduct mitigation,” he said.
Mr Dakuiboca said new relocation sites have been identified.
“Our plan A for Nakabuta was for us to move them to a safe house, mitigate and we move them back.
“If mitigation fails, then there’s a plan to relocate them.”
Mr Dakuiboca said the new relocation site had already been surveyed.
An environmental assessment has also been conducted. Every assessment that is required for a new site has been done.
“It’s just a matter of how well we work with them, and they give their approval to move.”
The village has experienced many landslides during heavy rains since last year, affecting their main source of income – the sea.
As a result of this continued erosion, the foundation of the community church and hall have been covered with sediments over the past six months.
