SUVA’s senior team kept its Skipper Cup campaign on track with a 25-8 victory over Kadavu in Round six at the Suva Grammar School grounds yesterday, with the side now turning its attention to the remaining matches of the competition.
Suva went into the match targeting a win with a bonus point but fell short of securing the additional point despite coming away with the victory.
The Suva senior team coach Vueti Tupou said the side had expected a challenging encounter against Kadavu, who he described as a strong team with vocal support.
“Today we were just looking forward to win against Kadavu, and we told the boys that we need to win this game with a bonus point,” he said.
“But we fell short of time, but under this condition, it’s anybody’s game. But I thank the boys for adapting well to this situation.”
The coach said Suva would now look to sharpen several areas of its game before its next outing.
“For us it’s just to control our position very well, but under this condition, I think the boys can show their skills,” he said.
“We’re just looking forward to improve on some of our attacking set-piece, and also our attacking team play.”
With the competition progressing, the coach said the team remained committed despite suffering three losses earlier in the campaign.
“People are writing us down, those three losses,” he said.
“But for us, we keep our faith, and we believe in each other, and we keep working.”
He also praised the commitment of the younger players in the senior squad, saying their exposure to senior-level rugby would benefit their development.
“These young players, they’ve been coming and attending training nearly every day,” he said.
“And we have to give them an opportunity. Exposing them to this level is really good for them.”
Suva’s senior team will now prepare for its next challenge against Lautoka, another strong side in the competition.
“Lautoka is a strong team, but as I said, we will play well, and we are looking forward to play against them,” the coach said.
The Suva camp will analyse yesterday’s performance before turning its attention to Lautoka, with discipline, attacking execution and teamwork expected to remain key areas of focus.
