THE Levuka Hospital has recorded 72 cases of dengue fever, with no deaths so far this year.

The Ministry of Health said this in a statement issued yesterday as there has been a surge in cases reported over the past two weeks.

MOH confirmed the majority of cases were in the 10 to 19 age group and from several communities and villages on Ovalau.

“The Lomaiviti subdivision outbreak response team (SORT) have upscaled their public health response with site-specific and community-wide awareness and information sessions,” the statement read.

Some of the response activities implemented by the Lomaiviti SORT include information sharing in the bose ni tikina meetings on Ovalau, and evening awareness sessions conducted in several communities and villages.

MOH also said awareness sessions and source reduction/clean-up activities were held at St John’s College in Cawaci.

There were also targeted anti-mosquito spraying in hot-spot and at-risk villages and communities as well as case investigations and household inspections.

The ministry said surge capacity and readiness were activated by the Levuka Hospital facility, which included the use of recommended dengue fever clinical management guidelines for cases.
