Surfing happy with Melanesian Cup outcome

THE Fiji Surfing Association is pleased with the second place finish in the Melanesian Cup held in Samoa a fortnight ago.

Fiji managed 9327 points to finish behind Vanuatu which collected 11,640 points. New Caledonia and Samoa finished third and fourth, respectively.

Association president Isei Tokovou said the success of the national side showed the talent the country had in the sport.

“The success of the team is a perfect example of how much talent we have in the country and why our new push to develop youth and women’s surfing will make the difference in the future,” Tokovou said in a statement.

“Vanuatu however should be congratulated for focusing more on their junior development and bringing a full team of under-14 and under-18 year old surfers, making the difference in the overall point-score.”

Tokovou said they would focus more on the grassroots development to build a formidable foundation.

“We had our team competing against some of the regions most talented surfers and we not only held our own, in many categories we dominated.

“This is extremely encouraging and I personally look forward to kick starting our junior surfing program again and encouraging our youth to become more involved.”

The major highlight of Fiji’s performance was the first place finish from Aca Ravulo and Hannah Bennett in the open male and female category.
