All Fiji’s top surfers have been given special training programs as they build up towards the Japan Olympic Games.

Fiji Surfing Association coach Ian Portingale said all members of their training squad had been given specific training programs during the COVID-19 isolation period.

This, he said, was to help the athletes continue with their training as they bid for a spot in the team to be selected for the Olympics.

“We have 15 open surfers and 12 junior surfers in our training squads,” Portingale said.

“Our squad surfers have been given specific training to do whilst in isolation. Unfortunately we have no funds to travel overseas for lead-up events.”

Portingale said like most sports in Fiji, the COVID-19 isolation had affected all group training sessions and no known date for the upcoming world titles which had Olympic selection points. “All our surfers live here in Fiji as part of the selection criteria,” he said.

“The FSA and the Fijian surfers struggle financially even with the Fiji National Sports Commission funding. “This means there are no international events the surfers can attend.”
