Empty shelves and dwindling supplies of sugar are causing concern among retailers and consumers across parts of Viti Levu, with supermarkets struggling to secure regular deliveries.
Maxvalue purchasing officer Sonia Prakash said the supermarket’s warehouse had run out of sugar, with the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) advising of production issues affecting supply. She said FSC had only 25kg retail packs available when contacted.
RB Patel’s Lami branch has also been affected, with manager Sumal Mohammed confirming shelves had been empty since last week.
To manage limited stocks, the supermarket is restricting purchases to 2kg per customer to prevent bulk buying.
Consumers in Navua have also reported sugar shortages.
Attempts to obtain comments from the Sugar Minister were unsuccessful when this edition went to press.
