The sugar industry is not doomed despite the challenges it faces, says Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) chief executive officer Bhan Pratap Singh.

Speaking at the Dialogue Fiji National Budget Forum in Nadi on Saturday, Mr Singh said the industry would continue operating and would remain an important part of Fiji’s economy for many years.

“Government support will be required as needed,” Mr Singh said.

He thanked the Government for its continued confidence in the industry and reaffirmed FSC’s commitment to ensuring that budget support contributes to stronger financial performance, improved productivity and lasting benefits for the people of Fiji.

Mr Singh acknowledged that FSC continued to face a number of challenges, with more expected in the future, but said these could be addressed through collaboration among key stakeholders.

“Through continued partnership between Government, growers, financial institutions, development partners and the private sector, I am confident we can build a sugar industry that is financially sustainable, globally competitive and capable of continuing its significant contribution to Fiji’s economy for generations to come,” he said.
