A PACKAGE containing a white powdery substance, reportedly marked with the letters “DHL” and recovered from Namena Island in Cakaudrove, has been sent to Suva for analysis.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the package, containing a white substance believed to be illicit drugs, was found washed ashore and recovered by police.
Ms Naisoro said officers from the Savusavu Police Station were deployed on Tuesday, July 7, after receiving reports of the discovery.
“The substance is yet to be tested. It is being brought to Suva,” she said.
The parcel was retrieved by crime scene investigation officers.
She thanked members of the public for promptly reporting suspicious packages.
She said 76 parcels recovered to date from the Lau Group, Qamea, Kadavu and Beqa had all tested positive for cocaine.
“The Fiji Police Force is liaising with the Australian Federal Police to ascertain the source and destination of the illicit commodities.”
Members of the public have been urged not to handle suspicious packages but to report them immediately by calling 1681.
Meanwhile, the Northern Division’s Operation Sasamaki team seized more than 5600 plants believed to be marijuana from a farm in the Qaravutu farming area.
A suspect has been taken into custody for questioning and investigations are continuing.
