THE European Union will undertake a feasibility study on diversifying sugarcane production into alternative high-value crops and livestock systems.
This has been approved by Cabinet.
In a statement, Government said the study would assess the sustainability and performance of the sugar sector, identify viable alternative agricultural value chains, and evaluate opportunities to strengthen productivity, resilience and income generation for farmers.
“It will also examine pathways to strengthen food security, reduce reliance on imports, and improve linkages between agriculture and key sectors such as tourism,” the statement said.
“The initiative is expected to support the development of a more diversified and resilient agriculture sector, improve livelihoods in rural communities, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
“Findings from the study will help guide future policy decisions and investment strategies for the transformation of Fiji’s agriculture sector.”
