ASSISTANT Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa has issued a strong warning to students about the dangers of drug use, saying a single poor decision can have lifelong consequences.

Speaking at Delainamasi Government School in Nasinu yesterday to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT), Mr Ravunawa said young people experimenting with drugs were risking far more than addiction.

“Many young people who experiment with drugs are not only risking addiction, but are also exposing themselves to life-changing diseases that can affect their health, education, families and future dreams,” he said.

He urged students not to give in to peer pressure or the misconception that drug use is socially acceptable.

“Your life is precious, and your future is worth protecting. Do not allow anyone to convince you that drugs are cool, harmless or a shortcut to acceptance through peer pressure.”

Mr Ravunawa said true strength comes from making responsible choices.

“The strongest person in the room is not the one who follows the crowd. The strongest person is the one who has the courage to say ‘no’ when everyone else is saying ‘yes’,” he said.

He encouraged students to reject drugs, trafficking, violence and other risky behaviours, and to embrace education, sports, faith, family and healthy living.

Addressing parents and guardians, Mr Ravunawa said the fight against drugs and HIV required a collective effort.

“It cannot be won by schools alone. It cannot be won by Government alone. It cannot be won by churches alone. It requires all of us working together.”

He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening HIV prevention, testing, treatment and community partnerships to protect young people and build healthier communities.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, rugby sevens great and World Rugby Hall of Fame member Waisale Serevi also addressed students at Nabua Secondary School in Suva on the dangers of drug use.

He urged students to reject illicit substances for the sake of their future.
