A strong wind warning remains in force for large parts of Fiji as weather officials continue to monitor hazardous conditions brought about by a persistent southeast wind flow and heavy southerly swells.
The Fiji Meteorological Service says the warning covers the coastal areas of southern and eastern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Yasawa, Taveuni and nearby islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and surrounding islands.
A coastal inundation alert also remains in force for the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, southern Viti Levu from Natadola through the Coral Coast to Navua, Taveuni and nearby islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu.
According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, a high-pressure system southwest of Fiji is generating moderate to damaging heavy southerly swells that could lead to sea flooding in vulnerable low-lying coastal areas.
Residents in affected areas are being warned to expect strong southeast winds with average speeds of up to 46 kilometres per hour and gusts reaching 55 kilometres per hour.
The adverse weather conditions are expected to create rough to very rough seas, making marine travel hazardous, particularly for small craft operators.
Cloudy periods and brief showers are forecast for Serua, Namosi, Navua, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni and nearby islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, as well as Kadavu and nearby islands.
Most other parts of the country can expect mainly fine weather, although cool nighttime temperatures are forecast.
The Fiji Meteorological Service is also warning that sea flooding of low-lying coastal areas is likely, particularly during high tide periods from tomorrow.
People living in coastal communities are advised to remain alert, secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary marine travel, and monitor the latest weather updates and advisories issued by authorities.
