FIJI’s triple jump specialist Eugene Vollmer believes the 2025 Fiji Finals champions will be decided from the relays.
The former Fiji representative, who currently holds the national record in triple jump, predicated that competition this year will be a level above the rest given a few factors.
The Pacific Mini Games topped his list of reasons but more precisely the hunger from other schools to challenge for the gold medal and the existing ‘status quo’
With that very aspect, Vollmer believes a school needs to win seven or more gold medals to have a grasp of the title.
“Competition is going to be really high for the bigger schools if they are looking to try and win the Coke Games; they are going to have to try and win at least seven or eight gold medals to win.
“It’s going to be very close; it will come down to the relays,” he said.
Vollmer, who is assisting boys’ champion Marist Brothers High School, observed from the zones the top form of Queen Victoria School and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School in the girls’ division.
“QVS looks good, they look really good. I think some of the schools out of the Triple N too might be coming close to sort of challenge the status quo and its schools like Nakasi, they have some really good middle distance runners, and you have the top two from the West, out of the Ba Zone in Xavier and Natabua.
“In the girls’ division, MGM looks very strong right now. I think ACS, I could be wrong, but I think they are trying to build up their program again, but they could again pose a threat to MGM and all those smaller schools like Naitasiri and Wainimala who always have really good distance runners,” he added.
The Coca-Cola Games will be held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva from Thursday to Saturday.
