The Nasinu Magistrate’s Court has directed the State to recharge Imran Khan as soon as possible after accepting explanations from two police officers who failed to appear in court over his unlawful possession of illicit drugs case. The police officers’ bench warrants were cancelled after they explained their absence during proceedings on Tuesday.
However, a third warrant issued against a civilian staff member remains active until she appears before the court.
Khan was previously discharged after the three failed to attend court, resulting in the termination of proceedings on the case.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has acknowledged criticism of the police force following the officers failure to attend and said the Internal Affairs Unit would continue disciplinary action against those responsible.
He said failures by officers to perform their duties and respect court processes had affected public confidence, while police continued efforts to improve accountability, training and service delivery.
