The Government has taken a major step towards improving service delivery to Fiji’s maritime communities with the signing of an agreement for the construction of a new double-hull operations vessel valued at more than $690,000.
In a statement, the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management said the agreement was signed last Friday by acting permanent secretary Mitieli Cama and Integrated Welding Industries.
The new vessel would support operations across the Lomaiviti Group, Northern Division and Western Division, strengthening the Government’s ability to reach remote and island communities.
The ministry stated the vessel would play a key role in bringing government services closer to people living in maritime areas by supporting the delivery of development projects and improving transportation of officials, equipment and essential supplies.
“The vessel will also help Government bring services closer to maritime and island communities by supporting the delivery of development projects, transporting officials and supplies, and improving access to essential services such as healthcare, infrastructure support and emergency assistance,” the statement read.
The ministry stated the investment reflected Government’s commitment to improving connectivity and ensuring that people living in remote communities had better access to services and development opportunities.
Once completed, the vessel is expected to significantly enhance rural development efforts while strengthening disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
“Once completed, the vessel will strengthen rural development efforts, improve connectivity and enhance Government’s response during disasters, ensuring timely and reliable support reaches communities — even the most remote parts of the country.”
The vessel is also expected to provide a reliable platform for government operations and emergency response, particularly during natural disasters and periods of urgent need in maritime regions.
