Six athletes are earmarked to make up Athletics Fiji training squad for the Olympic Games.
The six include Team Fiji sprinter Waisake Tewa, long distance champion Yeshnil Karan, Pacific Games gold medalist Deborah Bulai, Vishant Reddy, Braelyn Yee and Kesaia Boletakanakadavu.
“Waisake Tewa is one of those earmarked to be one of the key senior runners for Team Fiji,
He is also one of the six athletes who have been earmarked by Athletics Fiji to be in the training squad for the Olympic Games,” said Athletics Fiji head coach and Development Officer Albert Miller senior.
“We have Tewa in the 100, Deborah Bulai in the hammer, Braelyn Yee and Kesaia Boletakanakadavu in the 100m, Yeshnil Karan and Vishant Reddy who is the 800m runner from Korovuto.”
Miller explained the events they were targeting by choosing these six athletes.
“If you don’t qualify outright, in the Olympic Games can only go for the 100, 800 and marathon so, if you want to go to the Olympics, its either you qualify outright or you score points in one of these three events to be able to be selected.
“Yeshnil Karan needs to run the 800, he can run the 1,500m unless he qualifies. Unless he runs the 800, run in a marathon or the 100m, its going to be hard,” Miller added.
These athletes are also expected to be part of the Oceania Athletics Championships.
