THE Vodafone Fiji Bati’s final 23-member squad for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup could look significantly different from the side initially planned by coach Mick Potter, with Viliame Kikau, Jahream Bula and the Fainu brothers reportedly in doubt.
The Fainu brothers — Latu, Samuela and Sione — remain subject to International Rugby League eligibility clearance, while rumours surrounding Kikau and Bula have added further uncertainty to Potter’s final selection. Kikau and Bula were originally identified as key members of the Bati leadership group.
A possible 23 could therefore include Apisai Koroisau, Sunia Turuva, Waqa Blake, Taane Milne, Maika Sivo, Kurt Donoghoe, Brandon Wakeham, Jacob Saifiti, Caleb Navale, Kitione Kautoga, Josese Lanyon, Ben Nakubuwai, Semi Valemei, Jason Qareqare, Jethro Rinakama and Senivalati Vunibola.
The potential absence of several established players could also open the door for Fiji-based talent.
Saru Dragons fullback Senivalati Vunibola has emerged as the most prominent local contender after Potter described his Vodafone Cup final performance as “outstanding”.
Potter has confirmed injuries have already forced changes to his plans, creating opportunities for players who were not initially first-choice selections.
The final 23 is expected to be named this week, with Fiji opening its World Cup campaign against the Cook Islands on October 18 before facing Australia and New Zealand.
