In a significant development for Fijian rugby league, the Kaiviti Silktails have solidified a partnership to compete in the NSWRL competitions through funding support from the Australian government’s PacificAus Sports program.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiated the partnership at Churchill Park in Lautoka before the Kaiviti Silktails and Penrith Panthers showdown last Saturday.
Rabuka emphasised the Government’s role in advancing high-performance rugby league in Fiji.
“Rugby league’s exponential growth in Fiji over the past two decades is noteworthy. We express gratitude to the Australian government for its unwavering support,” Rabuka said while speaking on the significance of sports diplomacy within the Vuvale Partnership between Fiji and Australia.
Meanwhile, Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Pat Conroy, shared similar sentiments on the enthusiasm for the renewed partnership, highlighting its positive impact on elite competition and rugby league development in both countries.
“The collaboration aims to boost pathways to elite competition for Fijian rugby league talents while nurturing local coaches, match officials, and support staff,” Conroy said.
“Moreover, it seeks to pave the way for the emergence of future Fijian sporting stars, reinforcing the shared passion for rugby league between Australia and Fiji to strengthen cultural and community ties.”
Among the distinguished attendees were Education, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka, Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru, and Australia’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Ewen McDonald.
