CONTAINMENT and monitoring operations following the sinking of the MV Spirit of Altruism in the waters off Draunibota Bay in Lami have now been completed.

This was highlighted by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji.

MSAF confirmed that inspections and monitoring activities were carried out in coordination with the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited and other relevant stakeholders after the vessel sank on the fringes of the bay.

The Authority said swift response measures helped contain the oil spill linked to the incident, with no further emergency response currently required.

The sinking raised concerns over potential environmental impacts in the Lami area, prompting authorities and partner agencies to closely monitor the situation and implement containment measures to prevent the spread of oil in surrounding waters.

MSAF said its immediate response and monitoring responsibilities relating to the incident have now been fulfilled, but discussions regarding the removal of the wreck would continue.

The Authority has not indicated when salvage operations for the vessel are expected to begin.
