Political leaders officially declared September 13 as “Fiji Day” in Hawai‘i, marking a historic moment during the emotional Fiji Tribute Concert held at the Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell.
The night honored the life, legacy, and cultural impact of the late George “Fiji” Veikoso, a beloved Pacific music icon whose influence transcended borders.
Over 28,000 fans gathered, with 8,100 inside the stadium and more than 20,000 watching from the overflow area in Kapiolani Park.
The crowd was treated to performances from island music legends and rising stars, many of whom were mentored or inspired by Fiji.
In a show of recognition, political leaders took the stage mid-concert to present formal proclamations.
Honolulu City Council Chair Tommy Waters and Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami delivered remarks, while the City’s Enterprise Services Deputy Director Jocelyn Doane declared September 13 “George Veikoso Day” in Honolulu.
Hawai‘i State Representative Darius Kila went a step further, announcing that Governor Josh Green had proclaimed it “Fiji Day” statewide.
The concert blended heartfelt music, community pride, and official honors, ensuring Fiji’s name, voice, and message of unity will echo throughout Hawai‘i and the Pacific for generations to come.
