Fiji National University vice-chancellor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba is calling for increased recognition and support for seafarers who play a critical role in the region’s connectivity and heritage.
Speaking at the World Maritime Day celebration on Friday, she emphasised the significance of prioritising maritime safety and education in Pacific national budgets.
“The Pacific is a vast oceanic continent, and seafarers are crucial to our connectivity. It is imperative that we prioritise their safety and education in all our budgets across the region,” Ms Nabobo Baba said.
She urged industry leaders and Government to provide better resources, equipment and training for seafarers.
“You need not only speeches but equipment, skills, resources, and all the support necessary to carry out your duties safely and effectively.
“You seafarers are battling the oceans with newer and harsher conditions like no other time before. It is vital that we equip you with the necessary tools and training to navigate these challenges.”
She also called for improved working conditions and well-being for seafarers, recognising their contributions to the global economy and the preservation of Pacific heritage.
“Our collective commitment is due today to honour the seafarers, to give them the recognition they deserve, and to train the next generation with the resources they need.”
