Adi Maopa Secondary School will make history on Friday as the first school from the Lau Group to participate in the Film Fiji Kula Awards 2026.
Deputy head boy Jone Lesikikadavu, who will take part in both the film and stage categories, said the opportunity was a proud moment for the school and the people of Lau.
“It is my first time participating in the Kula Film Awards, and also the first school from the Lau Group to be participating,” he said.
Deputy head girl Fungawaka Fonolahi said she was honoured to represent the school on a national stage.
“I am very grateful for this opportunity, excited, and I’m also looking forward as it is my first time participating,” she said.
Teacher and team leader Atunaisa Qiolevu said 49 students are involved in the competition, entering two categories.
Their film, The Neglected Lights, has been selected among the top 15 entries.
The stage performance will celebrate Lau’s cultural heritage, including the influence of Indian and Chinese communities, while also exploring the growing impact of technology on Vanuabalavu and its people.
Mr Qiolevu said students had overcome challenges during preparations, including limited time and space to practise.
“There were hardships along the way because we had to endure, we had to persevere,” he said.
He urged the people of Vanuabalavu living in Suva and elsewhere to come out and support the students on Friday.
Tickets are available through TicketMax and the Film Fiji office at Civic House.
