THE Assistant Head of Delainamasi Government School says HIV education in primary schools is helping students build confidence to talk about health issues and clearing up misconceptions.
Makelesi Soqosoqo said the school partnered with Medical Services Pacific as a pilot school to deliver HIV information to students at the grassroots level.
She said the materials provided were age appropriate.
“Children really enjoyed doing this artwork and at the same time gain knowledge from the information that is needed to be related to them,” she said.
Ms Soqosoqo said after a few weeks of peer-to-peer and group discussions, students became more confident to share.
“And that created a doorway for us to come in and provide them with the necessary information, correct information, and to help them in their journey.”
She said the program also helped teachers address stigma.
