Fiji’s first vocationally registered specialist nephrologist, Dr Amrish Krishnan, has been announced as a Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) candidate for the upcoming general election.
SODELPA confirmed his candidacy, highlighting his contributions to kidney healthcare and public medical services.
Dr Krishnan, who grew up in Lautoka and attended Natabua High School, completed his medical degree in 2006 and a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine in 2013.
Following specialist training in New Zealand, he returned to Fiji in 2015 and became the country’s first vocationally registered specialist nephrologist, according to the party.
He also established intensive care dialysis services for acute kidney injuries, helped design Fiji’s first public dialysis centre and founded The Kidney Hub (Fiji).
Explaining his decision to enter politics, Dr Krishnan said improving healthcare access remained his priority.
“My interest in entering politics is an extension of my longstanding commitment to public service, particularly in improving access to quality healthcare for disadvantaged communities across Fiji, and for those residing in rural, remote and maritime areas.”
He said meaningful reform required practical solutions rather than simply identifying problems.
“Meaningful progress requires more than identifying problems. It requires the ability to build teams, mobilise resources, establish partnerships, and translate ideas into practical solutions.”
Dr Krishnan outlined six healthcare priorities, including equitable access, disease prevention, workforce development, infrastructure, financial accountability and collaboration.
He also pledged support for indigenous rights and equal opportunities for all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, religion or socioeconomic background.
