The Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC) has welcomed the consultation by the Special Committee on the sugar industry with growers and stakeholders in the Western Division this week.
Council chief executive officer Vimal Dutt said this was an important opportunity because decisions about the sugar industry must include the voices of our growers.
“SCGC encourages growers to participate, speak openly and contribute towards shaping the future direction of this industry,” he said.
“Council extends sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Immigration, the Honourable Minister Viliame Naupoto and his team for assisting with the processing of work visas for cane harvester operators from India.
“Such practical solutions are important as we address harvesting operations and labour challenges.”
The Sugar Committee is chaired by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
Members include Professor Biman Prasad, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Viliame Gavoka, Manoa Kamikamica, Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs Tomasi Tunabuna, Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu, a member designated by the Leader of the Opposition, and Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua.
