DUBBED the “Sledgehammer” by HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series commentators, Eroni Sau is likely to play his last few games of the series in the next leg — London and Paris. The 7s series unearth the policeman’s talent with his strong defence and powerful attack and he is leaving for greener pastures.

He will join French Top 14 club Perpignan (USAP) in the next season. Born at his village in Marou, Naviti, also on Yasawa, but raised by his namesake and grandfather (mum’s dad), Sau earlier told this newspaper he started playing rugby on the sandy beaches of Nabukeru and Marou villages.

“And I know that my grandfather is also happy with what I have achieved. He told me after my first 7s outing that he was proud of me and what I have achieved,” Sau said.

The robust winger is a top contender in Gareth Baber’s list for the world cup which is schedule to be played on July 20-22 in at the AT&T Park, San Francisco, USA.

In the race for the rookie of the year award, Sau has played 46 games for Fiji where he scored 165 points from 33 tries.

He was voted top scorer at the Hong Kong 7s this year and won four tournaments for Fiji — Hamilton, Vancouver, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Commenting on Sau’s signing, Christian Lanta, the club’s sports director said Sau presented the characteristics of a Fijian winger with support, speed, ability to win one against one and an effective tamer.

Sau will join the USAP at the end of July after the world cup.

He signed a two-season contract with the club, the club website reported.

He will join former national under-20 player Adrea Cocagi and Nadroga coach Esala Nauga’s son Alivereti who is part of the academy.
