Suva Sangam High School has booked a spot in the quarter-finals of the Fiji Secondary Schools Southern Zone Rugby League competition after a last-minute try against Gospel High School in the under-17 grade.
After trailing 1-0 to Gospel throughout the match, the boys in yellow stripe managed to cross over for a try to give them a 4-1 lead before the sound of the final hooter in the elimination round yesterday.
Sangam team manager Akosita Vakatawa said though the boys got off to a slow start, they managed to find their groove in the second spell to steal the win from Gospel.
“We did not play the way we wanted to today, but we are happy to come out with a win in the dying seconds of the match,” Vakatawa said.
“As we came into half time, our coach spoke to the boys and gave them words of encouragement which I believe is what they needed to hear before jumping back on the field.”
Gospel managed to secure their only point through a drop-goal in the first half, where they controlled much of the match.
Yesterday saw the elimination rounds of the competition from the under-15 to the under-19 grades.
“Looking at today’s match, there are a lot of things we need to work on and we will need to come back more prepared for our next match.”
Meanwhile, in round three of the Pherrus SEZSSL Girls competition, Ratu Latianiara defeated Noco Secondary 36-0, Namosi Secondary beat Ratu Simione Matanitobua school 36-0, and ACS beat Dudley 6-0.
