The Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji (SSDPSF) has confirmed that it has lodged a formal complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) calling for an investigation into a serving police officer accused of making derogatory remarks against Hindu and Muslim religious practices.

The complaint follows the circulation of a video on social media showing the officer, who also serves as a pastor, preaching that participation in major Hindu festivals such as Diwali, Ram Naumi, and Navratri, as well as Eid, amounts to involvement in “demonic activities.”

In a statement, the SSDPSF said it views the remarks as “deeply disrespectful, divisive, and contrary to Fiji’s foundational values of racial and religious harmony.”

“The Sabha has written formally to the CID seeking a full investigation and appropriate action under the relevant laws of Fiji,” the statement said.

“Such comments are not only offensive to Hindus and Muslims, but they also undermine public trust in the impartiality of the Fiji Police Force.”

The organisation said it was particularly troubled that the comments were made by a serving law enforcement officer.

“The Police Force promotes racial unity and interfaith cooperation as part of its community policing programs,” the Sabha said.

“When such divisive messages come from within its own ranks, it damages the integrity and credibility of the institution.”

The SSDPSF urged all faith leaders and community representatives to reject hate speech and reaffirm Fiji’s long-standing commitment to interfaith harmony and national unity.

“Places of worship must uplift humanity, not divide it,” the Sabha said.

“We remain committed to upholding the principles of Sanatan Dharm — truth, respect, and universal brotherhood — and will continue to work with government and civil society to strengthen peace and understanding across all communities.”
