Safe, affordable housing provides families with dignity, security and the opportunity to build better lives, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said as he officially opened 16 new Public Rental Board flats at Lagilagi Housing in Jittu Estate, Raiwaqa, on Tuesday.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mr Rabuka said the project reflected the Government’s commitment to improving the lives of Fijians through inclusive, people-centred development and expanded access to affordable housing.
“It’s not just the great work that has been done, it’s also the willingness of the traditional landowners to allow their land to be used for our resettlement from the villages and the rural areas,” he said.
Mr Rabuka said housing developments undertaken across the Suva-Nausori corridor demonstrated the Government’s commitment to addressing housing demand through partnerships with traditional landowners willing to make land available for affordable housing.
He said the commissioning of the new flats represented more than the completion of another housing project.
“It is the reaffirmation of the Government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for our people through inclusive people-centred development.”
Mr Rabuka said access to affordable housing created opportunities for families and helped build stronger communities.
“Every new home represents dignity, security, and opportunity.
“By providing safe, affordable, and quality housing, your government is creating an enabling environment where families can thrive, where children can pursue their education in stable surroundings, where communities can contribute more effectively to social and economic development.”
Mr Rabuka said the Ministry of Housing had been allocated $25.6 million in the 2026-2027 National Budget to continue key housing initiatives, including the First Home Ownership Initiative, the formalisation of informal settlements, and the relocation and resettlement of families living in informal settlements.
He also urged residents to play their part in creating a safe and supportive community.
“The good houses, the affordable houses, whether they become safe homes depends on you.”
