THE Republic of Fiji Military Forces has pledged full cooperation with a police investigation into the death of 32-year-old Sakiasi Radravu, whose family alleges he died from injuries sustained after being assaulted by members of a joint police-military task force.
Military commander Major General Jone Kalouniwai said the RFMF was aware of the allegations and had launched its own internal investigation into the personnel allegedly involved.
“We understand the gravity of the situation and are treating the matter with the utmost seriousness,” Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said.
“While I cannot comment on the intentions or actions of the Fiji Police Force, please be assured that we will cooperate fully with any police investigation.”
Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said the military appreciated the public’s patience while investigations continued and would provide updates as its internal inquiry progressed.
Meanwhile, the Police Criminal Investigations Department has taken over investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mr Radravu’s death.
Police have also confirmed that a post-mortem examination has been ordered to determine the cause of death. According to police, initial information gathered from medical officials indicated that Mr Radravu presented himself at the Valelevu Health Centre on June 3.
Police said medical officials advised that he be admitted for further tests and treatment. However, they claim he later signed a discharge slip and returned to his home in Kinoya on the evening of June 4.
“Attempts made by health officials to treat his condition were futile,” police said. “The information gathered at these initial stages of inquiries are subject to further investigation.”
