Some residents in the greater Nasinu area have been without water for three days.

They claim water had not been delivered to their area since a landslide at the Wainibuku Reservoir caused disruptions to water supply last Sunday.

Tacirua resident Nileshni Lata, 29, said as a mother of two, having no water posed a lot of problems.

“Apart from needing water for the usual needs like washing, cooking and bathing, my mother-in-law is also a kidney patient and she needs to go to the toilet frequently,” she said.

Anaseini Tagilala, a mother of four living in Kalabu, said this was the worst time to be without water given the recent outbreak of COVID-19.

“The virus containment requires us to be clean and sanitised and here, homes are without water,” she said.

Lasarusa Sowea, a 69-year-old resident of Nadera, said the recent frequent showers experienced across the central area had been a true blessing.

“This frequent rainfall has filled our buckets and water tanks and has given us ample water supply as there has been no water carted to this area since the disruptions started on Sunday,” he said.

Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) chief operating officer Seru Soderberg said repairs and restoration works to the dislocated pipe section of the inlet to the Wainibuku Reservoir were ongoing.

“The time frame is dependent on the weather and safety concerns from both COVID-19 and the on-site hazards of a major landslide,” he said.

“We kindly ask customers in the greater Suva area to help us and other customers by using water sparingly during this time so as not to strain the system since it is still operating at a reduced capacity.”
