KADAVU has emerged as the only consultation venue where a single submission represented the collective voice of the people, with the island’s chiefs and communities unanimously calling for the removal of Fiji’s 2013 Constitution.

At Namuana Village, Tavuki, yesterday, the people of Kadavu presented one united position to Government, backing the removal of the Constitution and supporting all provisions of the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill 32 of 2026.

Speaking on behalf of the island, Tui Naceva Ratu Jona Nawakalukalu said the chiefs and people had gathered the previous day and agreed to speak with one voice.

“The people of Kadavu came together yesterday and agreed unanimously to have one voice present today,” he said.

“I speak on behalf of all the chiefs and people of Kadavu as the Tui Naceva to present our submission for the 2013 Constitution to be removed.”

He also confirmed their support for the proposed amendments.

“That we have agreed to the amendment Bill 32, 2026 and all its provisions.”

The unified submission distinguished Kadavu’s consultation from other venues, where multiple individuals and groups presented their views on the proposed constitutional changes.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka told the gathering that the Parliamentary Special Committee was collecting public submissions before presenting its findings to Parliament ahead of the third reading scheduled for November 2.

“If more than half the citizens of Fiji vote for a change to change the Constitution than we shall change and remove the 2013 Constitution and go with the 2026 constitution,” Mr Rabuka said.

He said the committee was in Kadavu to hear the people’s views as part of the national consultation process.
