Concerns over residential fire safety have been raised by the National Fire Authority (NFA) after two house fires were reported within four minutes of each other in the Nausori area.
The first fire was reported at Waicoka in Cautata, Tailevu, at 1.13pm on Sunday, while a second blaze at Ramautar Feeder Rd in Vuci South, Nausori, was reported at 1.17pm.
According to the NFA, the Waicoka fire completely destroyed a vacant three-bedroom timber and corrugated iron house, causing an estimated $90,000 in damage. NFA said firefighters from Nausori Fire Station arrived to find the structure fully engulfed in flames before bringing it under control at 2.25pm.
At the same time, firefighters from Valelevu Fire Station in Nasinu responded to the fire at a family home in Vuci South at 1.40pm.
The authority said the three-bedroom house, occupied by a family of six, was extensively damaged after crews arrived to find the property well alight.
NFA said additional support from Suva Fire Station was required as Nausori firefighters were already attending the Waicoka incident.
The authority confirmed that no injuries were reported in either fire, despite two occupants being present at the home in Vuci South.
NFA chief executive officer Puamau Sowane said the incidents reflected a worrying trend that continued to place communities at risk.
“We continue to see fires occurring in residential properties, many of which could potentially be prevented through increased awareness and vigilance,” Mr Sowane said.
He urged property owners and families to remain vigilant.
“Fire safety starts at home, and every family should take the time to identify and eliminate fire hazards before they become emergencies.”
Investigations are continuing.
