AS we celebrate Christmas over the next few days, let us not forget the real significance of Jesus Christ’s message to mankind –– that of love, hope, compassion and peace.
This was the message from Fiji Labour Party leader and former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry.
“Christmas is traditionally a time of joy when homes are lit up with glowing Christmas trees, tables spread with Christmas sweets and delicacies and we delight in the sharing of gifts with our families and friends,” he said.
“But let us spare a thought for the less privileged who will not be able to afford all the pleasures of the festive season either for want of means or because they have little to celebrate.
“Recent developments around the world have dampened the holiday spirit for many this Christmas season. We refer to the uprising and political tensions in China, India, Britain, the Middle East and the hundreds of families who have lost their homes, properties and farms in the bushfires that have devastated millions of acres in Australia and the United States.
“Here at home, we are coping with an economic recession that will make it very difficult for many struggling families to cope with the necessities of life, let alone indulge in expensive Christmas fare.
“Our prayers go to all those who for one reason or another are unable to share in the joys of the festive season. May the blessings of Christ be upon us all.”
