The reinstatement of Aseri Radrodro as Education Minister was always the objective of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), says Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka.
The former SODELPA leader said that in January, he had initiated a petition and made the case personally to the Prime Minister on behalf of SODELPA to reinstate Mr Radrodro to his former role as Education Minister.
However, Mr Gavoka said it was unfortunate that some people believed he had sought the position.
“It is sad though that some people thought I coveted the position,” Mr Gavoka said.
“In a way it has ruined the relationship within the party as some believed I should not have been sitting in the chair at Education.
“But, I explained that the chair belonged to SODELPA and I had to fill it as the stewardship for Education was entrusted by the people to the party.
“We need to rebuild the relationship within SODELPA as no matter how good anyone is, if relationships are strained, we have no hope.”
Mr Gavoka said Mr Radrodro was a seasoned politician and “should do well if relationships are mended and allowed to flourish”.
“I am speaking from experience, trying to lead a party in turmoil in the last election and we all know what happened.
“Somehow these things happen when I am overseas.
“I got back from New Zealand yesterday (Wednesday) and learnt of the development on arrival.
“Perhaps, it could have been done better.”
Mr Gavoka said he was very fortunate to have worked with the staff at the Education Ministry, with able leadership from the permanent secretary, Selina Kuruleca.
