Fiji has planted more than 27 million trees under its national reforestation program, bringing the country closer to its target of 30 million trees over 15 years, says Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu.

Responding to the 2026-2027 National Budget in Parliament on Monday, Ms Bainivalu said the achievement reflected a nationwide commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable forest management.

“This achievement reflects the collective effort of landowners, communities, schools, faith-based organisations, development partners and citizens working together in environmental stewardship. I extend my heartful thanks to each one of them,” Ms Bainivalu said.

She said the ministry would now focus on improving the quality and long-term success of the program.

“The ministry will continue to improve program quality through stronger technical support, improved nursery systems and higher survival rates to ensure that every tree planted delivers long-term environmental and economic benefits.”

She said the ministry would also strengthen partnerships with Fiji’s major forestry companies to expand plantation development across the country while maintaining a balance between commercial production and environmental protection.

“In addition, the ministry will continue working closely with Fiji Pine Limited and Fiji Hardwood Corporation Limited to expand plantation development nationwide.

“While commercial plantations remain important for supporting the timber industry, equal emphasis is placed on indigenous species, fruit trees and non-wood forest products.

“This balanced approach strengthens the resilience of our forests to enhance and maintain ecosystem health, supports biodiversity and enhances sustainable rural livelihoods across Fiji.”

Ms Bainivalu said the approach would ensure Fiji’s forests continued to deliver environmental, economic and community benefits for future generations.
