RAKIRAKI cane grower Amrijit Singh is calling on the Government to provide water tanks for farmers struggling with prolonged dry weather.

Mr Singh said about 30 farmers in the Ellington community were relying on a single borehole for their water needs.

“There are about 15 houses in our Ellington community and about 30 farmers, and we are just using one borehole,” he said.

“So we need water tanks. We can fill the tanks.”

Mr Singh said the area had received little or no rain in recent weeks, making it difficult for farmers to maintain their sugarcane crops.

“If it was raining it would be really helpful for us in terms of our sugarcane farms but now it’s not raining.”

He said farmers were closely monitoring advisories from the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) on the impact of El NiƱo conditions in Fiji.

Mr Singh said access to adequate water was important for farmers as the dry conditions continued.
