Joshua Rahman yesterday gave consent under oath to the Suva Magistrates Court for his extradition to New Zealand.

The 26-year-old, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the High Court in Suva after he was found in possession of cocaine worth more than $30 million in 2019, took the witness stand before Acting Chief Magistrate Waleen George.

Ms George said the court needed to be satisfied that Section 12 (3) A and B of the Extradition Act were satisfied.

Rahman said he was aware of and had received a copy of the Director of Public Prosecution’s (DPP) application for his extradition and the submissions of the DPP and his counsel in the matter.

Rahman confirmed to the court that his instructions to his lawyers were that he was willing to voluntarily surrender himself for extradition on the condition that if convicted and sentenced in NZ, any sentence he would serve there would be reduced on his sentence in Fiji.

The matter will be called on May 13 for a ruling.
