Prime Minister and The People’s Alliance party leader Sitiveni Rabuka has told party members he could lose his leadership at today’s annual general meeting, signalling a possible transition ahead of next year’s general election.

Speaking at the AGM, Mr Rabuka said he entered the same hall where he had previously lost the leadership of his former party, knowing history could repeat itself.

“Today I came in knowing that I could lose my leadership of the party or we could start the journey to find new leadership of the party in the year ahead,” he said.

“It is your will, the members’ will, the branches and the regional grouping. That is your will, not mine. I am a servant of your will.”

Mr Rabuka, 78, said leading the party at his age was not easy, but the support of members had enriched, empowered and re-energised him.

“I have been enriched. I have been empowered. I have been re-energised to lead.”

He thanked PAP branches for funding most of the party’s activities and supporting its officials and executives.

Mr Rabuka also acknowledged the Coalition partners who formed Government with PAP in December 2022, as well as those who had since joined.

“We are the Coalition government. Those that formed the coalition with us in December 2022 and those that have since joined us and have become very important pillars of the governance. We acknowledge their role, their input, their support.”
