SPIRITUAL intervention is needed to help address the growing social issues affecting communities, including drugs and HIV, says Roko Tui Dreketi Ro Teimumu Kepa.
Speaking during the Rewa Provincial Council meeting yesterday, Ro Teimumu said delegates recommended fasting and prayer as part of the province’s response to the challenges confronting young people.
“We cannot do it alone,” she said.
“We need spiritual intervention for that.”
Ro Teimumu said the idea of fasting and prayer had been raised several years ago but did not receive much support at the time.
“Fasting and prayer were suggested years ago, but perhaps the time was not right because people looked at us as though we were talking about something unusual.”
She said attitudes had since changed as communities became increasingly concerned about the rise in drug abuse, HIV and AIDS, and other social issues.
“Everyone is now concerned about the challenges facing our young people, not only drugs but also HIV and AIDS and the many other social problems affecting our communities.”
During the meeting, delegates recommended that communities come together in prayer, including setting aside time between midnight and 3am each day.
Ro Teimumu said the challenges confronting the country could not be solved by one province alone and required both collective action and spiritual guidance.
