The Registrar of Political Parties, Ana Mataiciwa, has rejected the application to register the proposed Liberation of Fiji Party (LFP) after it failed to meet the minimum membership requirements across Fiji’s four divisions.

Following verification of the membership list, the Registrar found the party fell well short of the legal threshold required for registration.

Although the proposed party submitted 5,257 membership applications, only 4,073 were verified as eligible, below the required minimum of 5,000.

The verified membership figures were:

-Central Division: 1,599 verified (2,000 required)

-Western Division: 1,460 verified (1,750 required)

-Northern Division: 826 verified (1,000 required)

-Eastern Division: 188 verified (250 required)

As a result, the Registrar did not approve the application and has formally advised the party’s representatives of the legal requirements that were not met.

Mataiciwa said political party registration is governed by established legal standards designed to ensure transparency, accountability and compliance with Fiji’s electoral laws, with all applications assessed consistently and in accordance with the law.

The proposed Liberation of Fiji Party has the right to appeal the decision to the Electoral Commission within 14 days.

The Fijian Elections Office says it remains committed to assisting applicants to understand and comply with the registration process while safeguarding the integrity of Fiji’s political party registration framework.
