If given the greenlight, the David Group’s $2 billion casino project in Nadi will employ more than 600 people at a rate of more than $10 an hour.

This was confirmed by the head of the David Group casino project in Fiji, Sandeep Singh, at a media conference last Wednesday.

“I had put a proposal to the investors that it should be above $10 an hour. So, locals will be employed, we are expecting more than 600 local employers,” Mr Singh said.

He said when “we submitted for the employment part, it was also a negotiation for the casino owners”.

“Seeing that Fiji pays a low salary, I can say that even Fiji pays a lower salary than the Philippines.”

Mr Singh said the annual salary of employees would be paid “at a high rate”.

“This is not only a casino, but it has all the hotels, amusement park and other aspects.

“And the salary must be above $10K, which is a $30,000 or $35,000 annual salary. That is what we are working out at the moment.”

Mr Singh said Fiji was losing its young generation to greener pastures overseas and that migration was increasing.

“We need to let people stay in the country, work here for a sufficient amount of money so they can earn and look after their families.”
