The Marama Qaqa project was officially launched yesterday at the Nasinu Wesley Church in Nadera, Nasinu, marking a significant milestone as the first project in Fiji to focus on women and girls with physical disabilities in sports.

The project was inspired by Kalesi Nainoca who was deeply influenced by her late father Saimoni Nainoca, a special education teacher and former sports development officer for Fiji Paralympics.

His dedication and passion for empowering individuals with disabilities fueled Kalesi’s decision to pursue her master’s thesis on understanding the challenges faced by disabled women in sports.

“By shining a spotlight on disabled women in sports, the Marama Qaqa project aims to break down barriers and foster a more inclusive and equitable society,” said Nainoca.

“We will be working on projects, going around the communities, talking about sports and also working closely with Fiji Paralympics.”

“This initiative also aligns with the theme of International Women’s Day, which celebrates the inspiring contributions of women worldwide.

“As we commemorate International Women’s Day, let us come together in unity and solidarity to amplify the voices of women with disabilities.

“It is crucial to recognise their unique contributions and strive towards a world where every woman, regardless of disability, is valued and respected.

“Thank you to all who supported the historic launch of this project and let us continue this journey with unwavering dedication to inclusivity and equality.”
