FIJI Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry has called for an independent inquiry into the disappearance of cocaine worth an estimated $31million from the Suva High Court custody.

Mr Chaudhry described Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s response to the disappearance of 39 kilogrammes of cocaine as “shockingly pathetic” and urged him to “immediately take charge of the situation”.

He called for a “high-powered, independent inquiry, not a police investigation”, saying the alleged replacement of cocaine with flour made the incident more serious.

“The cocaine bars were under lock and key. It should not be difficult to identify those who were responsible for ensuring its safety,” he said.

Mr Chaudhry also questioned security measures at the court exhibit room and said it was “absolutely unacceptable” that no charges had been laid.

Mr Rabuka agreed to the call for an independent inquiry.

“Yes, I agree,” he said, adding that it could involve “an independent agency”.
