We again celebrate Press Freedom Day.
These are the words of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka as the media industry celebrates Press Freedom Day today.
“Today, it is again a Press Freedom Day with a difference,” he said.
“It is different from last year, when Fiji was uncomfortably experiencing its new – found freedom, after sixteen years of unrestricted freedom enjoyed by the government but nobody else!
“Today, the taxi drivers, the farmers the old and the young, rich and poor, all are enjoying press freedom, freedom of speech and expression, freedom of choice.”
Within the law, Mr Rabuka said all Fijians were experiencing this exhilarating feeling of freedom like breaking the surface of the water after an enforced long dive or swim under water.
“You relish those first few deep breaths and can almost taste the sweetness of the air that fills your lungs.”
