Potential to be self-sufficient

NATIONAL milk production figures indicate that Fiji’s dairy farmers have maintained, and in the case of bulk suppliers, increased production in the 2021 financial year, despite seven months of lock down and border restrictions.

This was highlighted during the 7th annual general meeting of the Fiji Cooperative Dairy Company Ltd (FCDCL) in Nausori on Friday last week. Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu spoke to more than 200 dairy farmers that the industry was facing a number of constraints and highlighted the milk price, feed costs and the lack of attention to infrastructure as concerns that his Ministry was now reviewing.

“It is my belief that the dairy industry has the potential to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of milk if all the stakeholders work together to achieve this achievable goal,” said Mr Rayalu.

A press release from FCDCL said submissions were made from the members for the FCDCL Board for a review. Acting chairman Solomone Nata thanked the Minister for his support and for taking the time to attend the AGM.
