Police have confirmed they are investigating an alleged incident in Qamea, Taveuni, after a woman reportedly fell ill and was admitted to hospital.
It is alleged the woman had given birth and placed the baby in a bucket used for pig feed.
The following morning, the woman’s grandfather reportedly took the bucket to feed pigs and was shocked to discover the baby inside.
It is further alleged the matter was hidden from authorities, with an attempt reportedly made to bury the baby.
The incident is understood to have come to light only after the woman fell ill, with the alleged discovery made later.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed investigations are ongoing.
