POLICE are investigating an incident at a prominent all-girls school after two male intruders allegedly entered a dormitory during a power outage last week.
It is alleged that in the early hours of Sunday morning, two men entered one of the school’s dormitories, which was occupied by students, and harassed some of the girls.
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro said he had directed the school’s principal to lodge a preliminary report with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), with police confirming investigations are continuing.
Mr Radrodro said the alleged intrusion was the first security breach of its kind brought to the ministry’s attention in the past three years.
“We’re also trying to look at implementing new measures to upkeep the security of the girls in dorms,” he said.
He said the ministry had reminded teachers, school management and other staff of their responsibilities in maintaining campus security and was reviewing additional measures to improve the safety of students living in boarding facilities.
Students are also expected to undergo awareness sessions this week, to be conducted jointly by the ministry and the community policing unit.
Meanwhile, in a statement to parents, the school’s Parents Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA) president said the safety of students remained their highest priority.
The association said parents of students in the affected dormitory had been contacted and the school was providing support while working closely with the PTFA to review security arrangements.
The association also called for additional patrols by the police, strengthened security and increased supervision around the boarding facilities.
