Two Fiji Police officers who were issued bench warrants for failing to appear in court in a drug case involving Imran Khan have appeared before the Nasinu Magistrates Court, with the warrants against them now cancelled.

In a statement, Fiji Police said the officers presented themselves before the court today and provided explanations for their failure to attend the earlier proceedings.

The Resident Magistrate accepted their explanations, cancelled the bench warrants and directed the State to recharge Khan as soon as possible.

A third bench warrant issued against a civilian staff member remains active until she is produced before the court.

The warrants were issued after the officers and the civilian staff member failed to attend court, leading to the discharge of Khan, who had been charged with unlawful possession of illicit drugs.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu acknowledged the criticism directed at the organisation following the case and said the Internal Affairs Unit would continue disciplinary proceedings against those responsible.

“The officers’ failure to discharge their lawful duties and the lack of respect for the court of law further erodes public trust, harming efforts to rebuild trust and confidence between Police and the public,” Commissioner Tudravu said.

He said the Fiji Police Force was addressing shortcomings in service delivery through training and lectures, while ensuring the Internal Affairs Unit remained responsive to complaints about poor service delivery and the conduct of police officers.

The case is expected to return to court once Khan is formally recharged, in accordance with the Magistrate’s directions.
