ASSISTANT Commissioner of Police — Operations Livai Driu has confirmed that internal disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against officers based at the Valelevu Police Station for their alleged conduct in handling a report against another police officer last week.

This decision comes in the wake of a viral video showing the actions of two police officers, which are now under investigation by the Internal Affairs Unit.

“We acknowledge the criticisms and are actively addressing the issues that have plagued policing over the years,” Mr Driu said.

Due process, he said, would be followed and charges laid after the investigation.

“Upon the completion of the investigation process, appropriate charges as per internal policies will be laid.”

Mr Driu said the force had vowed to rebuild lost trust in communities around the country.

“As an organisation, we are committed to rebuilding trust within our communities and recognise that it starts from within.”

Mr Driu said the police department had identified shortcomings and was rectifying them through mentoring, training and increased monitoring of internal procedures.
