Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently in New York to attend the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80), where he is expected to reaffirm Fiji’s global advocacy for peace, climate action and multilateral cooperation.

In a statement released by the Fijian Government, the Prime Minister said this year’s UNGA is particularly significant for Fiji and the Pacific region, as he aims to advance the “Ocean of Peace” vision, a concept formally adopted by Pacific Leaders during their meeting in Honiara earlier this month.

“This year’s General Assembly offers an important platform for us to share the Pacific’s collective voice and promote our shared commitment to peace, unity, and sustainable development,” said the statement.

“Our vision of the Pacific as an Ocean of Peace is more relevant now than ever, as we face increasing geopolitical pressures and worsening climate impacts.”

The “Ocean of Peace” concept, first introduced by Prime Minister Rabuka during UNGA78 in 2023, calls for the Pacific region to be recognised as a zone free from geopolitical rivalry, anchored in unity, dialogue, and shared responsibility to protect ocean resources and communities.

Mr Rabuka’s address at UNGA80 will focus on this landmark declaration and Fiji’s leadership role in promoting global peace and security.

Accompanying the Prime Minister to UNGA80 are the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, . Mosese Bulitavu, Minister for Health and Medical Services, Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, Mrs. Suluweti Rabuka, Permanent Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister, Dr. Lesi Korovavala, and Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Raijeli Taga.

The UNGA80 general debate runs from September 23 to 29, providing a key forum for 193 member states to deliberate on international challenges and pursue multilateral solutions.
